November 2009 Volume 06 Issue 11

Big Cheese has Oakley Park dedicated by the Allison Family!!!

"Meet you at Oakley Park!" Where's that you may ask? It's located at the bottom of Kanani where is intersects with S. Kihei Road. Mostly young children wait for the school bus there, but it's a nice place to meet when you are walking to the Kihei Caffe!

Thank you Bunny, Barry, Val, Squeaky, Tosha and Peaches! Dogs like to meet there too. It's a tad small to be a "dog park"!

~ Thanksgiving is upon us ~

...And so is Beaujolais Nouveau, Nov 19th!!!

The word on the street-and more importantly in the vineyards and wineries of Beaujolais-is that the recent harvest of 2009 produced wines that will be something special. Beaujolais has always been made to celebrate the end of the harvest in France, and coincidentally is perfect timing for Thanksgiving. Generally lightweight with soft tannins, it pairs nicely with the variety of dishes on the table. This September's weather was perfect for the final ripening of the Gamay. Fermentation was natural and easy. "The wine practically made itself," as the vignerons put it.

Early tasters have found the Nouveau 2009 showing lots of concentration with ripe, rich flavors of currant, blueberry, black cherry and hints of spices, cocoa, pepper, even licorice. In all, a very warm and harmonious style.

Mark your calendar for the 2009 release Thursday, November 19th. You got it… any bottle pre-orders will receive a 10%...no minimum!!! Make you pre-orders soon!!!  We get the Beaujolais Nouveau made for famous French celebrity chef, Paul Bocuse and his restaurant in France.

Recap of October's Tasting: 5 Blind Reds

The lovely leggy Reds~

  • Freemark Abbey Merlot, Napa
  • Edmeades Zinfandel, Mendocino
  • Yangarra, Shiraz, Australia
  • Colina Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile
  • Carmel Road Pinot Noir, California

We did this line up to test people's senses. We didn't want to do the usual flight beginning with Pinot Noir, so it was quite interesting and fun. Again, lots of folks were right on in getting the varietals correct!

Mahalo to Michael Hopkins of Majestic Fine Wines, and Fotis of Grand Crew - Your support is highly appreciated!

sottocenere

Cheese Case Update!!!

Berkswell, raw sheep, England. It’s been too long! Delightfully nutty with hints of sweetness, this was one of the favorite picks at the blind red tasting, and it goes well with those wintery reds!

Fourme au Sauterne…another off the hook Belgium blue that is fined in Sauterne, France. Cow’s milk, fruity, fun and delicious!

Monte Enebro, a usual suspect in the case, goat’s milk from Spain. It has an ashed rind, and the cheese is rich, velvety and fully opulent.

Sottocenere, cow, Italy, with an ashed rind accompanied by at least 16 spices ranging from nutmeg to allspice. The off-white paste is infused with black truffle. We fondly refer to this lovely as “dusty butt beautiful”! When cutting this cheese the best tool is the resin knife and you will want to place waxed paper or parchment under it to catch all the spices.
